This new construction home on Hawthorne Avenue in Elmhurst, Illinois was a collaboration between JoAnna Baum Interiors, JD Development, and CraftStone Architects. The homeowners brought our team on early in the process while working with JD Development on the ground-up construction, with the goal of introducing warmth, character, and thoughtful design into a brand new build.

Many new construction homes can feel stark or overly modern when they lack architectural detail. From the beginning, our focus was to create a transitional home that blends traditional character with a refined modern aesthetic, ensuring the home would feel layered, timeless, and deeply livable for years to come.

To accomplish this, we incorporated extensive millwork and architectural detailing throughout the home, bringing depth and interest to the interiors. Soft, muted color palettes were used to create a calming foundation, allowing the architecture and furnishings to take center stage while maintaining a sense of warmth.

The furnishings were intentionally curated to blend pieces from different time periods, creating a collected look rather than something that feels newly built or overly styled. Upholstery, textiles, rugs, and window treatments were selected in soft, tactile materials that add comfort and approachability while still feeling elevated. The result is a home that balances classic proportions with modern restraint, a hallmark of thoughtful transitional interior design.

Because this was a ground-up new build in Elmhurst, the homeowners wanted to invest in a design approach that would stand the test of time. Their goal was to create a home that would feel complete from day one, without the need to constantly update or redesign spaces. Every decision, from architectural details to the final accessories, was made with longevity and cohesion in mind.
